“Born On Death Row” is an animal testing documentary currently being made by Fiaz & Jacqui from The Base Vegan Retreat and Animal Sanctuary in Bristol.
Told From The Inside
Their journey has taken them into the world of industrial-scale breeding of beagle puppies for toxicology testing and experiments. Their first-hand experience in animal rescue and campaigning, combined with their creative backgrounds, gives them a unique position from which to tell this story with passion – aiming to both educate and activate its audience.
First Steps To Front Line.
As first-time filmmakers, just over a year into production, they have completed three US filming trips interviewing Moby, Dr Alka Chandna, Ridglan Farms whistleblower Scott Gilbertson and local campaign leads — including literally in the trenches at Ridglan Farms itself amid tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets. In the UK, they have filmed Mel Broughton, Wayne Hsiung, Rose Patterson, Professor Andrew Knight, Camp Beagle and others in the field.
Animals’ Point Of View
With patient coverage of animal experience through breeding facility and laboratory, and with powerful survivor stories, Born On Death Row keeps the animals’ experience at its centre. The fundamental question is by what right do we both use them in this way and by what right do we conceal the reality from public scrutiny?
The End
As momentum in the US campaign grows, the film is also beginning to explore whether a story that begins as “a film to help end animal testing” may ultimately become something more momentous: a film about how that ending was realised.
